Disporopsis URBAFLORA® ‘Shade Runner’

GROUND COVER

Lower growing evergreen

Disporopsis URBAFLORA® ‘Shade Runner’ is an evergreen groundcover developed for shaded spaces and understorey planting. It forms a dense, low carpet of rounded, glossy green leaves, reaching around 30 cm in height. Its creeping rhizomes help it spread steadily, creating reliable coverage beneath trees and shrubs where many other plants struggle to grow.

It is valued for its shade adaptation and strong performance in low-light areas. It stabilises soil, reduces water loss from the ground surface, and helps suppress weeds by forming tight foliage cover. The plant also provides a cool, insulated understorey layer that can soften noise and support invertebrates. In spring, it produces pendulous, creamy-white, bell-shaped flowers which are followed by purple-blue berries, offering seasonal interest and attracting pollinators.

Disporopsis URBAFLORA® ‘Shade Runner’ is hardy across the UK and northern Europe (RHS H6), thriving in a range of soil types except alkaline soils with a high pH balance. Growth is faster in rich soils in partial to full shade, while poorer soils in full sun will slow its spread, making it adaptable to different planting conditions. It tolerates dry periods once established and requires little ongoing maintenance.
